On March 19, 2026, Electrolux Group recalled about 174,800 Frigidaire gas ranges sold in the United States (plus another 5,300 sold in Canada) because the oven’s bake burner can experience delayed ignition. When ignition is delayed, gas accumulates inside the oven and then produces a sudden flash of flame when it finally lights. The Consumer Product Safety Commission and Electrolux are aware of 62 reports of delayed ignition and 30 associated burn injuries. The affected ranges, which were sold at Lowe’s, Home Depot, and Frigidaire.com between June 2025 and January 2026, retailed for $630 to $2,700. Electrolux is offering free, professional in-home installation of a redesigned bake burner.
From a managerial accounting perspective, the recall is a useful illustration of the costs of quality framework. Costs of quality fall into four categories: prevention, appraisal, internal failure, and external failure. A recall after the product has reached the customer, especially one involving reported injuries, is the classic example of an external failure cost. But the story does not end there. Electrolux is also very likely incurring appraisal costs (such as confirming which serial numbers are affected and inspecting units in the field) and prevention costs (redesigning the bake burner so future models are not susceptible to the same defect).

Discussion Questions
- What are the four categories in the costs of quality framework? Which category does a product recall typically fall into, and why?
- Even though a recall is clearly an external failure cost, Electrolux is also likely incurring prevention and appraisal costs as a result of this issue. Give an example of each that Electrolux would most likely incur and explain your reasoning.
- In addition to the direct cost of replacing the bake burner in each range, what other external failure costs might Electrolux incur because of this recall? Consider both short-term and long-term effects.
- From a cost-of-quality perspective, if Electrolux had spent more on prevention and appraisal during the design and testing of this bake burner, how might the total cost picture have been different? Discuss the trade-off.
- Do you think external failure costs like the ones associated with this recall are fully reflected on the income statement, or are there costs that do not show up in the accounting records? Explain.
