For some time, I have been occasionally using a variety of PowerPoint games in the classroom for review. Classroom games can inject some energy into a class and change things up. Used in moderation, review games can add a fun dimension to a course.
Starting today, my new “Accounting Review Games” blog is now live.
Games available
Currently, I have Jeopardy, Family Feud, Who Wants to be a Millionaire, and Connect4 games in the queue to be released in the next few weeks. I am also working on a variety of other games based on other TV game shows or board games.
What is provided
For each game, there is a PowerPoint file and an instructor’s guide. The instructor’s guide gives information on how to play the game in your classroom – and it also provides all of the game’s questions and answers so that you have a “crib sheet” as you are playing the game.
Appropriate course level
These review games are aimed at the introductory financial accounting course or the introductory managerial accounting course.
Topics covered
There are a variety of topics covered in the games. You can search the site by topic or chapter. You are also free to edit the game content to suit your class.
Scorekeeping
All of the games require a scorekeeper; I would suggest you nominate a student to keep score on a whiteboard or similar (all scoring is manual).
Technical requirements
Most of the games on this site will be in PowerPoint and would require PowerPoint 2013 or higher. In addition, only the Windows version of PowerPoint is supported.
As always, the content on my site is free and is for use in the introductory accounting classroom. I hope you find the games useful – I have enjoyed tinkering with the games to adapt them to introductory accounting. I will be posting some of the accounting review games here on Accounting in the Headlines occasionally, but you can subscribe to Accounting Review Games to be notified whenever a new game is posted.
Have a great day!
Wendy Tietz
Wendy, I just used the Managerial Jeopardy game this week in two of my classes. It was fun because the students really got into it. thanks for sharing these games with all of us.
Regardless of your age, the best is yet to come.
